Lebron James Everybody…

He can do everything, except sing and dance as evidenced by his performance at the 2007 ESPN Espy Awards show. Still entertaining and ballsy none the less.

Theodore, Nation’s Best Learn from LeBron James

9 07 2007

Theodore_lebron_photo_1_2Jordan Theodore approached his camp counselor in a crowded gym Saturday afternoon and asked, “What’s up, LeBron?"

Theodore is among the 70 top high school basketball players in the nation in attendance at the LeBron James US Skills Academy at the University of Akron. James, the Cleveland Cavaliers star who grew up in this inner city environment, has made himself available to the players -- even taking the court to compete with 20 college players here -- and Theodore is making the most of it.

Theodore_lebron_photo_3_3"I think it's great being able to talk to LeBron and ask him a couple of things," said Theodore, a rising senior point guard at Paterson Catholic who recently committed to Seton Hall. "I asked him the same thing I asked Steve Nash, how to become a better leader. I'm going to ask him a lot more questions. I'm going to get to know him better. I hope he gets to know me.

LeBron James Notes Day 1

6 07 2007

Lebron_nikeWell, after an 8-hour drive from New York to Akron, and another 25-minute walk from the hotel to the University of Akron, we're here for Day 1 of the LeBron James US Skills Academy. It's been a long day, and tomorrow's another one, so we'll get right to the headlines....

**Rutgers head coach Fred Hill and assistant Jim Carr are here, both staying in the same hotel as myself. Seton Hall assistant Dermon Player is at the Academy, and Matt Agnoli of the Jersey Journal and myself had dinner with him. Player is picking head coach Bobby Gonzalez up at the airport on Saturday morning. Geoff Billet arrives on Monday.

**Sitting near us at dinner was William Wesley, aka "The Most Powerful Man in Sports."

**Other head coaches we saw in the gym tonight included Jay Wright of Villanova, Mark Few of Gonzaga, Bruce Weber of Illinois, Tubby Smith of Minnesota, John Thompson III of Georgetown, Tom Izzo of MIchigan State, Skip Prosser of Wake Forest and Ben Howland of UCLA. Prominent assistants include Danny Manning of Kansas and Louisville assistant Walter McCarty.

**LeBron was in the gym tonight with a bunch of youngsters for the first session of drills but did not do any teaching. We hear he spoke to the players at the opening night banquet.

*Jay Bilas is an instructor and worked with the big men, including Greg Monroe, the 6-10 C frm Harvey, La. who is the No. 1 player in the Class of 2008. We will interview him later this weekend on various topics.

**Rutgers has offered a scholarship to Fuquan Edwin, the 6-5 rising sophomore from Paterson Catholic, and may be close to offering one to T.J. Clemmings, the 6-5 power forward who transferred to Paterson Catholic from Paramus Catholic. To quote recruiting expert Tom Konchalski, "Fuquan Edwin scores like we breathe." His nickname is 'The Finisher' because of his ability to close near the basket in transition.

**The Rutgers coaches spent part of the day watching the half of the 80-player group that included Lance Goulbourne of The Hun School, Dexter Strickland of St. Patrick and Sylven Landesberg of Holy Cross. The 6-7 Goulbourne was a last-minute addition to the Academy, and he previously told ZAGSBLOG that Rutgers is an option for him. Vanderbilt remains his leader and Georgetown is also involved.

As for Landesberg, Holy Cross coach Paul Gilvary previously told ZAGSBLOG that he's down to seven schools: St. John's, Rutgers, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Texas. Landesberg recently took unofficials to Virginia and Texas.

**St. Benedict's 6-9 big men Samardo Samuels and Gregory Echenique are both here, having spent last week at the Amare Stoudemire Academy in Phoenix. Samuels committed to Louisville and Echenique has a slew of schools recruiting him, including Rutgers.

Theodore_gauchso**Seton Hall commit Jordan Theodore of Paterson Catholic is here wearing a bandage on his hand because it's been swollen since May, but that hasn't stopped him from volunteering for various drills and standing near the front for added instruction.

"He's been a warrior," said Book Richardson, the director of the New York Gauchos AAU program. "He's been hurt since May."

Richardson added that he's constantly in Theodore's ear to get him to improve. Three or four times last year at Theodore's request, Richardson picked Theodore up in New Jersey, drove him to the Gauchos gym in the Bronx for a 6 a.m. workout and then got him to school on time. As we reported on Monday, Theodore got as much out of last weekend's Steve Nash Skills Academy as humanly possible.

Seton Hall's Player told us that he began recruiting Theodore last summer while Theodore was playing with the Gauchos and watched him drop 35 points on Greg Monroe's team at the Peach Jam and then follow that up with 25 points in the next game. Theodore ended as the leading scorer at the event. Player followed Theodore through 20-plus AAU games and came back very impressed.

"He was at every game," said Book Richardson, the director of the Gauchos. "He recruited him the hardest." Once the high school season started, Billet picked up the recruiting of Theodore and brought it home, while Player worked on other recruits.

Richardson said Theodore's Gaucho teams have not only beaten Monroe, but UCLA-bound G Jrue Holiday (Rivals No. 2), F Ed Davis (No. 11), Arizona-bound G Brandon Jennings (No. 12) and North Carolina-bound G Larry Drew (No. 81).

Richardson thinks Theodore and fellow Gaucho Durand Scott of Rice, who is also here, will end up being McDonald's All-Americans.

**Speaking of the Gauchos, three of them are here: Theodore, Scott and UConn-bound PG Kemba Walker. Darryl "Truck" Bryant, a 6-1 G from New York who's also with the Gauchos, is at Rbk U in Philadelphia, and St. John's is now the leader for him.

Gilchrist_courtesy_philly_inquirer**At the recent Fab Frosh All-American Camp, four of the top six and six of the top 14 players were from New Jersey, which bodes well for the future of hoops in the Garden State. Here are the rankings:

1. Michael Gilchrist, 6-7 F, St. Patrick (Above courtesy Philly Inquirer)

4. Myles Mack, 5-7 PG, Paterson Catholic

5. Tyrone Johnson, 6-1, Plainfield

6. Frankie Smalls, 6-3, Pennsauken

12. Shaquille Stokes, 6-0 G, St. Patrick

14. Sterling Gibbs, 5-7, Scotch Plains

So then not for LeBron's sake, but for your sake, let's take a look back at some of the albums and singles put out by pro athletes, and we don't just mean the crap Shaq and Kobe did. Even Gary Payton, T.O., J.R. Rider, Malik Sealy and an F1 driver have busted some recorded lyrics. -Description from the blog.
